• Copyright Act, 1791

• Antitrust Act, 1890 — How did that play into the story of the Arkansas Gazette?

• Telecommunications Act, 1996

• Freedom of speech — Defamation, libel, slander

• Politics and Fairness Doctrine

• Obscenity and Indecency

• Privacy — USA PATRIOT Act

• Intellectual property — Patents, copyrights, trademarks, Fair Use

• Ownership issues — Antitrust, vertical and horizontal integration

• Freedom of Information laws

Welcome to Media and Society Fall 2017 — and your first assignment!

I look forward to getting to know you all in Media and Society this fall. I'm looking forward to exploring the role of media in society and the interaction of media with society with you. My most important goals for you are to improve your media literacy so that you can evaluate real news and identify fake news and to ignite your passion about whatever form of media most interests you. To get us started, please comment with a bit of your background, your major, why you're in this class, which medium or media most intrigues you — and why. This assignment will be worth your first 10 points and is due by 11 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 30.

For 25 points each (50 for the assignment), respond to each exhibit: • What lessons can we learn today, 60 years later? • Who were some of the heroes in 1957?
