Evaluating News Sources

Using the Evaluating News Sources handout from class, choose five media outlets from across the political spectrum — one or two from the left/liberal side, one or two mainstream and one or two from the right/conservative side. Compare/contrast the coverage of one day's news across the five outlets. How is the news alike? How is it different? Were some items left out? Why? Can you tell where the media outlet lines up (liberal, conservative, neutral)? How and why? Do this for two days, so you'll have 10 total observations.  Post those here, and in conclusion, tell me whether you think the chart is accurate. Due by 11 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 6.

Paper 2 — Film and Society

Watch a film ( one that you have either not watched before or that you have not watched in a long time)   and write a three-point essay (introductory paragraph, Point A paragraph, Point B paragraph, Point C paragraph, conclusion) explaining how your film reflects society. It could be how the film reflects the society portrayed in the film. You could also draw some comparisons between the era the film portrays and today. We mentioned several oldies but goldies and saw some trailers in class. You can watch one of those or come up with one on your own, although I'd like it to come from before 2000. Introduction and conclusion should be a minimum of three to five sentences each. Paragraphs 2-4 should be a minimum of five to seven sentences each. 200 points. Typed copy due when we meet for our final class at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 6. Come see me if you have any questions.
