Welcome to Media and Society Fall 2017 — and your first assignment!
I look forward to getting to know you all in Media and Society this fall. I'm looking forward to exploring the role of media in society and the interaction of media with society with you. My most important goals for you are to improve your media literacy so that you can evaluate real news and identify fake news and to ignite your passion about whatever form of media most interests you.

I am Quinten Wells, I graduated from Benton High School in Benton, AR. I'm a journalism major with an emphasis in broadcast. I'm in this class because it's required for my degree, but I probably would have taken it anyway because media interests me. I am most intrigued by television journalism because I have always enjoyed being on camera and getting facts about current events.
ReplyDeleteI'm Rebekah Chaney! I graduated from Wonderview High School, which is a few miles outside of Morrilton, Arkansas. I'm majoring in Journalism, with an emphasis in online journalism! My major requires this class, so that is mainly why I'm in this class, but out of a list of options, this class definitely sounded the most interesting. I'm pretty intrigued by online media, because I've made it a habit of mine to read some news from online news sources in the mornings before I get up or before I go to bed. However, I'm most intrigued by keeping up with news on social media platforms, because I've always loved being able to see everyone else's perspectives and I like reading other people's thoughts and ideas about things!
ReplyDeleteMy name is Morgan Jenkins, I am a graduate from Mountain Home High School Career Academies in Mountain Home, Arkansas. I am a journalism major with an emphasis in broadcast. This class is required for my major, but I would have taken it anyway because I love to discuss current events and anything media related. I have previously worked at a radio station and I felt right at home talking on air and writing news. Through this job experience, I have been able to meet and interview numerous politicians. Being able to make personal connections and interview people is one of my favorite parts of journalism and I hope to make it into a career.
ReplyDeleteMy name is Alyssa Miller. I am from El Paso, Arkansas and graduated from Mt. Vernon High School. I am a freshmen pursuing a theater and creative writing double major. I choose to take this class because I enjoy consuming a multitude of media and it only seems obvious that I should be aware of its influence on society. My favorite form of media is podcasts. I do enjoy news or special interest podcasts but I think the most successful genre of the medium is fiction podcasts. It is astounding what podcast creators can do in a limited medium.
ReplyDeleteHello all, I am Will Stephan a transfer student from UACCB (a community college in Batesville, Arkansas) majoring in Digital Film Making, as well as currently in the decision making process for my minor. Originally from Michigan, I moved to Arkansas for family related reasons and in recent year shave been making my moves towards the world of entertainment. The fields I have worked in or currently am working in are :video production, radio production, and professional wrestling. I am in this class as I deemed it fit to go along with my major. Currently in media I am most intrigued by the behavior of social media and its effect on society in general in both positive and negative lights. I am genuinely fascinated by what the potential long term effect is with this form of communication.
ReplyDeleteHey Guys, I'm Sydney Icenhower! I'm from Dierks , Arkansas and I graduated from Dierks High School. Most people have no idea where Dierks is, but it's about twenty minutes out of De Queen. Anyways, I'm a psychology major. I took this class because it sounded interesting. I would have to say that social media intrigues me the most. It's a place where people can go to livestream events, express their opinions through comments, and catch up with online news sources.

My major is General Writing but I have been thinking about switches to Journalism because I am interested in writing for magazines and online publications. So with that being said, this course definitely intrigued me. Online publication and social media are my favorite mediums because it is constantly evolving.
ReplyDeleteHello, everyone! I'm Brittney Smith and I am from Greenbrier, Arkansas. Greenbrier is 20 minutes north of Conway. I graduated from Greenbrier High School in May of 2015. My major is Public Relations. I took this class not only because it is required for my major but because I thought it would be interesting. My favorite medium is social media due to it's fast paced nature and easy interaction with the rest of the world. I am a very impatient person, so through social media, I never have to wait to find out what is happening in the world.

I am double majoring in International Studies and Journalism with a minor in Linguistics. I really like any forms of photography and social media. I am currently working on the marketing team of The UCA Bookstore and really enjoy it. I took this class for my journalism major and because I am genuinely interested in the effects of media on life.

ReplyDeleteHello everyone! My name is Kate DeYmaz, I am a sophomore transfer student from Grand Canyon University studying journalism with an emphasis in broadcasting and minoring in Spanish. I am originally from Little Rock and simply felt called to come back to Arkansas to plant my roots here. Truthfully speaking, the form of media that intrigues me the most is social media. For it is ever changing and currently is seemingly necessary for my generation to grow and function. I am in this class in order to broaden my perspective regarding the function of media as a whole and its direct affects on society. I look forward to learning alongside you all this semester!
ReplyDeleteHello Guys, my name is Lorenzo Garnett, I am majoring in Art with an emphasis in Studio Art with a Marketing minor. I am originally from Chicago and I have a crazy story about how I ended up in Arkansas. Like many of you I am fascinated by social media not because I post on it like crazy but because it can put power into users hands easily. It is always growing and changing. I'm in this class mostly because I needed an extra class for a scholarship but this class is one that I wanted to take since I was a freshmen and never had the time to.
ReplyDeleteMy name is Andrew Jame, and I am a freshman majoring in journalism with an emphasis in broadcast. I am in this class because it is required for my major. I graduated from Bryant High School where I was on staff with the award winning Prospective newspaper. I made videos for the online newspaper while I was on staff. I also was very involved in Bryant High School's film program, where I made videos for all sorts of things. I am majoring in journalism/broadcast and minoring in film because I want to have some sort of career where I an continue to produce videos and video media. Naturally, video is the medium I'm most intrigued by. Video is probably the most easily consumable medium of media and it is becoming more popular and prevalent by the day. I wish to be able to use my video media skills in this class and this major so I can further my goal of being able to use these skills in whatever future job I may get.
ReplyDeleteI'm Ryan Bradford and I am a transfer student from UACCM. I'm a sophomore majoring in Journalism with an emphasis in Online Journalism and a minor in Political Science. I'm in this class to help get my degree in Journalism. I think the most interesting medium of journalism for me would be the online aspect (big surprise, right?). I consider the internet to be the future of journalism and most people get their news from their phone now days anyway.
ReplyDeleteI'm Nick Smith, and I graduated from Joe T. Robinson High School in Little Rock. I am a junior majoring in Digital Filmmaking but took this class because it sounds interesting and media is all around us so I figured I'd like to learn more about it. Sports media interests me the most because I'm a huge NBA fan and I work for the Athletic Department here at UCA, filming every sport. I hope to continue working with sports television after I graduate.

ReplyDeleteHello everyone! My name is Emily Meinzer, and I graduated from Texas High School in Texarkana, TX. My major is undeclared for the time being because I have no idea what I want to do with my life. However, I am taking this class because I'm leaning towards something involving photography and my academic advisor suggested this class, but it also peaked my interest, so here I am! I would have to say that social media is my favorite form of media because, like I said before, I love photography and being able to immediately see things is something I think we take for granted. Whether that be communicating with others, instant updates on anything and everything, or news, you can always count on the social media networks to be up to speed.

I’m a Freshman here at UCA and my major in currently undecided but I will probably choose to pursue a major in Biology or Anthropology and minor in whichever one of those I don’t pick as my major. I chose to take this class because it was the most interesting on the list to me since I’m curious as to how media truly affects our society today. Television and Photography are my favorite types of media because of the amount of expression allowed through each of them. While television is beneficial because of its easy accessibility and immediate relevance, photography is a creative way for humans to document the latest occurrences and the world around us.
ReplyDeleteHey guys! My name is Laila Sulieman and I am from Conway, Arkansas. I am a graduate from Conway Christian Highschool here in Conway and am entering college this year as a Freshman. My major is Biology and I am planning on picking up the minor of Chemistry next semester. The reason I am taking this class is one, of course, because it was one of the required classes that you had to pick from a list, and the other reason being that I chose it because I was interested in the idea of learning more about how important media is. I have always been intrigued by what I see on television, in movies, and even online on any social media website I may visit. Media today is a crucial part of society and I feel that learning more about it and ways to become involved with it can help better the communication between someone and the entire world.

The area of media I am most intrigued by would be film or entertainment because of the effect movies and celebrities or fame can have on society and the way they can motivate the world. I am in this class because journalism is my minor, I chose journalism because I thought it would work well with my major.

I am huge sports buff so the dream is to work for a sports team as an editor. I am most intrigued in print. I really enjoy reading magazines and thoroughly enjoy looking into magazines with good design and writing. I am interested to learn more about all forms of media.

ReplyDeleteHello everyone! My name is Kaley Dedner, I am from Bentonville, Arkansas, home of the tigers! I am majoring in Interior Design with plans to work as an Interior Designer for a large corporate company and then eventually shifting my career towards residential clients. I am in this class, because it was definitely one of the most intriguing options on the list, but also because the media plays a huge role and I would like to know how it works. The medium that intrigues me the most would definitely have to be any social media app. With push notifications allowing people to be informed about events occurring around the world in a quick instant is rather amazing. I also find it very neat to see how much quicker social media apps can inform people now compared to how news was shared in earlier times such as letters and telegrams.

If I had to choose one medium that intrigues me the most it would be television and movies. I think the effect film can have on a society is very dramatic. It is interesting to see how the theme of a movie, or even the clothing and trends in it, can inspire an audience.

I decided to take this class because it sounded pretty interesting, it sort of has to do with my field of study, and I needed an extra class to have enough hours to qualify for my only scholarship. So yeah, I'm looking to make some movies
